Metal Detector Testing: How to test a metal detector in 4 easy steps

Many companies own a metal detector in order to pass either internal or external audits, but are they working?

Often companies that see metal detection as an unnecessary evil fail to realize the true value to their business. Here are some very simple test guidelines for testing any metal detector used for inspecting cereal, flour, gum, cheese, meat, plastic pellets, paper and so on.

1) Test with production product
Make sure the product passes through the metal detector without cause a false reject. Refer to the owner’s manual for correct setup. You can download all Goring Ker manuals here.
2) Place metal test sample in the middle of the product
It is critical to place the test sample inside the product in a way that places the metal sample in the center (up and down and left to right) of the opening of the sensing head. This places the contaminate at the weakest spot for detection and will protect you the most.
3) Allow system to full reject product
What good is a reject device such as a flap (or flip) gate, retraction, kicker, air blast or other device if you don’t test it. Having the metal detector detect metal is only part of the answer. Having it reject the faulty product is the complete story. Allow the system to follow through as if you weren’t there. Refer to the operation manual for correct settings
4) Test 10 times for 100% rejection
Test test and re-test. Passing 10 packages (all different) through the system will give you a high level of confidence that the system is working correctly. If any of them fail take this as a warning to potential problems lurking around.
